Kassiopi, historically, a small traditional fishing village is now a village, and a resort on the affluent north east coast of Corfu, located 36 km north of Corfu town and Corfu airport. It is in the municipal unit of Kassopaia.
A heavily developed town with luxury villas, remains a summer social centre visited by tourists, specially from Great Britain and Italy. The town is said to have been founded in the 3rd Century BC, as a supply post during his war with Rome. After the Roman conquest of the island in 230 BC, many Emperors visited the place, most prominently Emperor Nero, who came to a Temple to Zeus. During the 5th century the temple of Kassios Zeus was conveted to a Christian church to honour the Holy Mother Mary. The Turks burned it in 1537 but it was restored between 1590 & 1591.The new church had two altars to accommodate both Catholic and Orthodox religions.
All along Kassiopi coast we can find tourist shops, eating and drinking places, banks, doctors, pharmacies, internet cafes, supermarkets, travel agents, a primary school, an Orthodox church, and a police station. At the back there is Mount Pantokrator and hills covered with olive groves, vines and citrus plantations. Kassiopi harbour, one of the prettiest on the island, set below a reuned medival fortress, is today´s focal point of the town´s social life by day and a trendy place by night with quietercalmer bars and restaurants with good fresh fish while bars and discos provide evening entertainment.
All around the harbour you can walk and see hundreds of young fish swimming between the coloured boats. Kassiopi combines its historic richness with a wide range of modern facilities, waterskiing, paragliding, diving center, tennins courts, swimming pools and motor boats, available for hire by the day or week. Kassiopi is a main port for trips all over the island of Corfu by both boat and coach.
The accommodation is mainly apartment type, with larger villa accommodation on the outskirts and the area surrounding. This resort, being a lively one, is perfect for those who are looking for a bit of life. Teenagers, families, young couples and groups of friends who want life come and return year alter year. The main beach is pebbled and there are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. At the top of Kassiopi near the main road there are showers, toilets and changing areas. No doubt, a place that is worth visiting.
