Old Perithia is an old village abandoned from its citizens, located in a beautiful landscape at the foot of the Pantokrator mountain, the highest mountain of Corfu island. Old Perithia resembles like a ghost village with an admirable beauty. The whole village is considered to be a unique architectural monument.
Apart from the old stoned traditional houses particularly impressive are the churches, which are built in a circle around the village and reveal the deep faith of Corfu people. At the entrance of the village you will see the steeple of St. James the Persian, a remarkable religious monument. Another building that attracts the attention of the visitors is the school of the village, an impressive old mansion decorated with the blazon of the local governor Skordili upon its entrance. The school operated until 1940. The village of Old Perithia has approximately 130 homes built mostly by Venetian architecture. Today, a few of them had turned into traditional tavernas with excellent local food open all year around.
The village’s location close to Pantokrator mountain gives to the visitor the opportunity to go up on the top of the mountain where the monastery of Pantokrator is situated. From this point the view over the whole Corfu island is unique.
